The Gemstone Colour Debate:

When it comes to categorising gemstones by colour, it's not as easy as it seems. While there are many popular gems that are easily distinguished by a singular colour identity, there are others that evade capture. There are several reasons why this is. For instance, some gemstones feature more than one colour, or can even change colour under different lights. The changing of colour is to do with how our eyes interpret what we see. The stone itself is always the same, in a fixed form. But if the light changes, it will appear different.

Alexandrite is an example of this. In daylight, Alexandrite appears as bluish green, whereas in incandescent light it appears purplish red. Other issues with gemstone colour categorisation include gemstones that are in-between colours. The Padparadscha Sapphire for instance is hotly debated among gemologists - is it salmon pink or sunset orange?

Other gemstones are associated with a variety of colours. Zircon for instance comes in yellow, green, red, reddish brown, and blue hues with no single colour type attributed to its identity. However, Sapphire is best known for its deep blue colour, despite being available in all the colours of the rainbow.
