The NIVO colour scheme was discovered during research into military colours beyond the standard olive drab, black, and desert shades. Originally created from a mix of yellow ochre, pigment white 5, and ultramarine blue, NIVO was developed at the Orfordness experimental station as a paint for British bombers, designed to blend with the colour and gloss level of open water at night.
