BAFTAs 2012 Red Carpet Review

By Luke McNaney, Monday 20th February 2012
The Oscars may be coming up this weekend, but last week it was the turn of the Brits to celebrate the sparkling stars of the silver screen at the 2012 BAFTAs.

The annual British awards ceremony honoured actors, actresses and filmmakers from home and Hollywood, with French breakout hit 'The Artist' also taking home seven awards.

Although it was great to see heavyweights like Meryl Streep, Martin Scorsese and John Hurt take home awards, here at the Jewel Hut we had one eye fixed away from the awards action and firmly on the red carpet.

A number of attendees wowed crowds outside London's Royal Opera House, with the usual array of dresses from top designers on display. However, there was no shortage of eye-catching jewels, either.

Statement earrings continue to be a signature staple of the red carpet, with Christina Ricci, Gillian Anderson and 'Mad Men' star Christina Hendricks all pulling focus with dazzling earrings. 'Best Actress' winner Meryl Streep (pictured) opted for the more classic option with gold hoops, which perfectly complemented her Vivienne Westwood dress.

Elsewhere, another trend was developing on the necklines of actresses posing for snaps and fans. Michelle Williams, nominated for her portrayal of fashion icon Marilyn Monroe in 'My Week with Marilyn', wore a short necklace that grazed the collar bone. The subtle look was replicated by Olivia Williams, Elizabeth McGovern and red carpest host Fearne Cotton.

In direct contrast, 'The Help' and 'The Tree of Life' actress Jessica Chastain wore a multi-stranded necklace, while future Bond girl Naomi Harris wore a sparkling globe necklace.

Despite wristwear being worn by the likes of Gillian Anderson and 'Bridesmaids' star Kristen Wiig, bracelets and cuffs were less of a fixture this year, with earrings and neckwear making more of a statement. Meanwhile, style icon Tilda Swinton made a point of letting the dress speak for itself, choosing no accompanying accessories - but here at the Jewel Hut, we just love ourselves some red carpet razzle-dazzle.

Stay tuned to Jewellery News this week for more awards show fashion from the BRITs and beyond. And remember, next week is the big one: the Oscars.
